At Daniel Sod Farm, we understand how difficult it can be to choose the correct sod type. There are many factors to take into consideration when making this investment in your home or business. Appearance, grass density, root depth, watering needs, growth rate, soil requirements, and shade tolerance all play an important role in this decision making process. As leading experts in the sod business, we are here to help you choose the sod that best fits your individual needs. Please feel free to stop by our farm, or give us a call -- we would be happy to address your questions or concerns and guide you to the sod that best suits your personal requirements.

What Type of Sod Do You Need?

The basic types of sod being grown in Virginia are Kentucky bluegrass blends, tall fescue or tall fescue-Kentucky bluegrass mixtures, Bermadagrass, and zoysiagrass. Each type is best suited to particular uses and geographic areas in Virginia.

THE BENEFITS OF SOD

Superior Surface

Turf grass creates one of nature’s finest surfaces. Clean and soft, it’s the safest surface for sporting play which dates back to many centuries.

Instant Lawn

Sod will root down in about 10 days and can be ready for rough play within weeks. A seeded lawn cannot be used for months, and will not stop the soil or seed from washing or blowing away. Sod can be installed anytime the ground is not frozen.

Erosion

Because sod is fully mature the day it is installed, it immediately controls erosion with a carpet of root mass and grass plants. Sod can be installed on steep hills and is used on slopes for stabilization.

Reduces Heat

On a hot summer day, a lawn will be 30 degrees cooler than asphalt and 15 degrees cooler than bare soil. The front lawns of 8 homes have the cooling effect in hot weather of about 70 tons of air conditioning.

Filtration

Turfgrass lawns filter dirt and dust from your environment and eliminate mud. A lawn absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen keeping the air clean and fresh around your home. A lawn also filters and muffles noise.

Improves Value to Your Home

One of the most inexpensive ways to add value to your home. A nicely landscaped yard will add 10-15% to the value of your home.

Environmental Effects

Sod cools and cleans the atmosphere by reflecting the sun’s heat and absorbing noises, carbon dioxide and other harmful pollutants. It releases valuable oxygen and moisture into the air we breath.
